Drug Discovery

The Drug discovery laboratory is equipped with multi facet capabilities and potential research experts. The erudite and distinct experience of our scientists helps them to act efficiently for accomplishing the sequential activities of the drug discovery activity mentioned below.

Hit identification:
The lab is facilitated with latest software to identify the molecules that hit the receptor site and provides better pharmacological action.

Lead identification:
Molecules from hit identification are short listed for lead identification by means of synthesis and structure activity relationship.

Lead optimization:
The lead molecules are further optimized to produce molecules with biological activity.

Cancer is a killer disease takes more than 7.4 million lives all over the world every year. The cancer rates are increasing at an alarming rate. The current chemotherapeutic agents damages normal cells along with cancer cells and cause lot of unpleasant side effects. Our focus is mainly to identify and develop Multi Targeting Mono Chemotherapeutic Agents (MTMA) that can work with multiple mechanisms at cellular level and target only cancer cells.

The Drug Delivery research at Molecules is centred on developing novel formulations for the oral and dermal delivery. The developmental research mainly aims at decreasing side effects, increasing bioavailability and improving patient compliance for effective treatment. The current activity of drug delivery research is concentrated in developing platform technologies for a wide range of oral and topical products. The advanced technology is based on formulations containing miscrospheres, nanospheres and liposomes. All the formulations are subjected to stringent regulations of countries where the products are marketed.

About 33.2 million people are living with HIV today. The disease is highly complicated and AIDS patients are mostly prone to get affected by TB. The existing treatment cause more harm than helping the patients. Also there is an emergence to design and synthesize Anti retro viral agents as the HIV mutates and reproduce itself into drug resistant strains and spread inside the body at a faster rate. We are developing potent drugs to stop HIV and progression of the disease.

CVDs account for more than 30% of all global deaths. New cell-based therapeutic strategies are being developed in response to the shortcomings of available treatments for heart disease. The major CVDs include the following.

  • Coronary (or ischaemic) heart disease (heart attack) Cerebrovascular disease (stroke)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Heart failure Rheumatic heart disease

Our main area of interest in this field is Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a degenerative brain syndrome characterized by a progressive decline in memory, thinking, comprehension, calculation, language, learning capacity and judgement sufficient to impair personal activities of daily living. The rate of occurrence of AD doubles every five years for those between the 65 and 85 years of age. Our research is based on discovering drugs for reversing nerve cell damage.

The main areas targeted in this category are diabetes and obesity. Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time leads to serious damage to many of the body's systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels. Diabetes causes about 5% of all deaths globally each year. Our perspective is that the drug treatment of diabetes is lacking in convincing long-term efficacy and there are number of important concerns about side effects and long-term adverse effects.

Obesity is an emerging problem globally. The disease shows an association with other dreadful diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, sleep apnea, certain types of cancer and osteoarthritis. Some anti-obesity drugs have severe and often life-threatening side effects such as risk of high blood pressure, faster heart rate, palpitations, closed-angle glaucoma, drug addiction, restlessness, agitation, and insomnia. So there is an emergence for improving the drugs that serve to produce better cure rates with reduced side effects.
